Throttle controllers for Australian 4x4s and utes

Most modern 4x4s and utes use a drive-by-wire accelerator. When you press the pedal, a sensor sends a signal to the engine computer, and many factory settings are tuned soft for economy and emissions, so the first part of the pedal travel can feel flat or slow to wake up. A Roar 4x4 throttle controller plugs in between the pedal and the factory wiring and changes how quickly that signal builds. The result is a pedal that responds the way you expect, whether you are pulling out of a roundabout with a van on the back or keeping momentum through soft sand.

What a throttle controller does, and what it doesn't

• It changes pedal response. In the sharper modes, the same pedal movement asks for more throttle sooner, so the dead spot at the top of the travel goes away. In the gentler modes, response is softened for smoother, more precise control.
• It doesn't add engine power. It doesn't remap or reflash the ECU, and it doesn't change boost, fuelling or what the engine makes at full throttle. Flat to the floor, your engine behaves exactly as it did from the factory.
• It's reversible. Unplug it and the pedal goes back to factory feel.

Roar controllers have 6 driving modes and 9 sensitivity levels, so you can run a sharp setting on the highway, a soft one on a slippery track, and change between them whenever you like.

Who it helps

• Towing: a more predictable take-off with a caravan, camper or boat on the back, with less push-and-wait at intersections and hill starts.
• Sand and beach driving: quicker response when you need to hold momentum in soft going.
• Low range and rock work: a gentler mode gives finer pedal control when you are crawling over ledges or easing down a steep track.
• City and highway lag: takes the hesitation out of everyday take-offs, merging and overtaking.

If your vehicle already feels responsive to you, a controller will make less difference. It is most noticeable on vehicles with a lazy factory pedal setting.

Plug-and-play install

The controller connects at the accelerator pedal under the dash. You unplug the factory connector from the pedal, plug the Roar harness in between, and mount the control unit where you can reach it. There is no cutting or splicing of factory wiring and no software to load. Taking it out is the same steps in reverse, so it's easy to move to your next vehicle if the plug matches.

How to pick the right controller for your vehicle

The controller works the same way on every vehicle. What changes is the plug that connects to your accelerator pedal. Different makes use different connectors, and a model can change plugs partway through its life, for example at a facelift or with a new pedal assembly. That is why our pages are split by model and years.

1. Find your vehicle in Shop by vehicle below, or use the vehicle finder.
2. Match the series and years, for example Hilux N80 2015–2018 versus Hilux N80 2020 onwards.
3. Check your connector. Compare the plug on your pedal with the plug photo on the product page, especially if your vehicle was built close to a model changeover.

Left-hand-drive and GCC-spec vehicles: LandCruiser, Patrol, Hilux and other models sold in the Gulf and other left-hand-drive markets can use a different pedal assembly from Australian right-hand-drive versions. Please email a clear photo of your pedal plug before ordering so we can check it matches.
